The Aftermath: Justice and Healing for Sexual Assault Survivors
Somewhere in the U.S., a woman is raped every two minutes. Too many victims suffer a second nightmare after their assault – at the hands of law enforcement. Many agencies are underfunded, and the lack of resources and training can doom a case before it begins. And sadly, some investigators doubt and degrade victims until they flee from law enforcement, leaving predators free to attack again.
"The Aftermath: Justice and Healing for Sexual Assault Survivors," tells the story of a passionate group of advocates and police investigators pressing for justice through improved policing, while survivors share their stories of heartbreak and healing.

In May we filmed a visual sequence to accompany a survivor's poem, "Extraordinary Grace." The dance was choreographed and performed by two gifted Juilliard students, Julia Cielsielska and Natalie P. Wong (pictured left to right). Also pictured is Director of Photography Karen Rodriguez. The poem is interpreted by Voice Actor Carol Monda.

Production on "The Aftermath" began in early 2023 with an interview of Lavinia Masters. She is is founder and director of Hope S.A.V.E.S. Ministry, a victim’s advocate and survivor, life/trauma coach, author and keynote speaker. Also present were segment producer Amy Martinez and James Navaira (pictured).

Ms. Masters worked with Texas State Representative Victoria Neave to craft House Bill 8. Officially known as the Lavinia Masters Act, the 2019 law requires rape kits to be tested within 90 days, and removes the statute of limitations for sexual assault cases where the evidence has not been tested. She serves on the Governors Sexual Assault Task Force (SART) in Texas, the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault (TAASA) Sexual Assault Advisory Board, and the Turning Point Rape Crisis Center Board of Directors.
